What are the requirements for membership?

  • Membership into the Society is by invitation only, based solely on academic results.
  • Invitations are mailed out annually as part of the university’s membership drive.
  • Eligibility is identified by the university. Golden Key does not have access to your academic records.
  • Offer of membership is extended to the top 15% of all undergraduate students who have completed their first year of full-time study or part-time equivalent.
  • The top 15% of postgraduate coursework students can also be invited based on their results from the previous academic year or semester.
  • Distance and international students are also eligible.

Are postgraduate students allowed to join?

In Australia and New Zealand, only postgraduate coursework students are eligible. Eligible candidates are required to be in the top 15% of their peers based on their results from the previous academic year or semester, as verified by the university. At some universities, the top performing PhD students are also eligible. In Malaysia, graduate students are not eligible for membership.

How did Golden Key get my personal details for the invitation?

The top 15% list of eligible students each year is provided by the university. Golden Key does not have access to your personal records or details. If you choose not to join, Golden Key does not maintain records of invitees. However, if you continue studying and remain in the top 15% of your class, you may receive another invitation letter next year.

How did my university determine that I’m in the top 15%?

The process differs slightly for each university. Golden Key provides a list of eligibility criteria to the university, who then run the list according to their own internal process. The university may determine that you are in the top 15% based on your degree program, faculty, or overall GPA.

What are the payment options?

Payment options vary for each country. For more information, please visit https://www.goldenkey.org/members-chapters/how-to-join/.

  • Australia, Singapore and Vietnam – AUD $100
  • India – Rs2500
  • Malaysia – MYR 110
  • New Zealand – NZD $115

I meet the Golden Key requirements but I haven’t received an invitation. What do I do?

There are several reasons why this may have occurred:

  • Your letter of invitation may have been sent to your permanent address.
  • The invitation could be lost in the mail.
  • Forward a copy of your academic transcript results within the last two years to Golden Key Asia-Pacific, as we do not have access to your academic records. Please allow some time for your eligibility to be verified as it is a manual process.

The deadline has passed on my invitation letter. Can I still join?

  • Yes, you may still join. The invitation code that you received expires within one year of the postmark date. Contact Golden Key Asia-Pacific for more information.

What happens at a Golden Key Information Session?

In most cases the olden Key Information Session is presented b y a Golden Key staff member. The session runs for approximately one hour including plenty of time for asking questions. It covers the Golden Key background, benefits of joining, past and upcoming events, and a Q&A session. If you cannot make the Information Session listed on your invitation letter, you can access the Online Information Session (www.goldenkey.org.au/information) or contact Golden Key Asia-Pacific via phone or email.

QUESTIONS AFTER JOINING GOLDEN KEY

How do I obtain my membership certificate?

If you are a new member and have RSVP'd (confirmed) that you are attending the New Member Reception, you will receive a personalised certificate at this event. If you do not RSVP to the New Member Reception before the set deadline date and still attend the event, you will receive an interim certificate to ensure you are part of the proceedings. Your certificate will be mailed to you after the event. If you do not RSVP or attend the New Member Reception, your certificate will be mailed to you.

How long does it take to receive my pin and charm that I ordered?

Pins and charms can take 6-8 weeks to arrive. They are shipped via standard mail, and processed separately from your certificate, so you will receive them at different times. If you have not received it after 6-8 weeks, please contact Golden Key Asia-Pacific.

How do I RSVP (confirm attendance) for the New Member Reception?

The details for your New Member Reception are on the back of your invitation letter. Once your join payment has been completed (either online or through our office depending on your payment method), you should receive within 48 hours: 1) an email payment receipt, and 2) a join confirmation email.

In your join confirmation email will be details regarding your member ID, and a link to your university chapter's New Member Reception. This link will take you to the event registration page where you can confirm your attendance. Alternatively, you can sign into the website with your member ID, and register for the event by locating it on the My Chapter menu and viewing upcoming events.

If you choose not to go, or if for some reason you miss the event, your certificate will be mailed to you.

I joined last year, and received another invitation this year. Do I have to pay annual membership or pay the fee again?

No. There is only one membership fee when an individual joins. There are several reasons why you may have received another invitation:

  • Your name on our record does not perfectly match what the registrar recently provided
  • You recently changed your name
  • You are now at another university and we did not know that you transferred

If your details have changed, please log into your profile via the website and update your details or email us at apac@goldenkey.org and we can update your details for you.

  • Be assured that your membership to Golden Key is a lifetime membership and you only pay a once-off induction fee at the time that you first join the Society.

How is the membership fee used?

The membership fee is shared between the local chapter and Golden Key Headquarters. The membership fee funds membership benefits and supports local chapters in a variety of ways including:

  • Over US$12.5 million of Scholarships and Awards awarded to date
  • Regional leadership conferences
  • International Conference
  • New Member Receptions
  • Local academic, community service and social activities
  • Publications
  • Running the Society

I think I may already be a member. How can I find out for sure?

If you have recently joined please check your email for the email confirmation of your membership. Member IDs are not posted out so make sure when filling in your details you add your email address.

If you are still unsure, please contact Golden Key Asia-Pacific for assistance.

If I transfer from one university to the other, could I have my details transferred?

Yes you can, so long as the university you have transferred to has a charter with Golden Key and has a Golden Key Chapter.

I’m already a member but I have not heard anything from the society, why not?

  • It is important that both your chapter’s Executive Committee and Golden Key Headquarters know that you wish to remain connected with us and that we have your most current contact information.
  • Ensure that we have your correct information by updating your contact information via the Golden Key website: www.goldenkey.org.
  • You should also attend any local chapter programs or meetings. This is often how the local chapter knows that you wish to be actively involved with the chapter.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS QUESTIONS

What scholarships are available?

Golden Key has awarded over US$12,500,000 in scholarships to date. Up to date listings can be viewed at https://www.goldenkey.org/scholarships-awards/listing/. Scholarships are only available to Golden Key members, and each one has different application dates, deadlines and eligibility criteria. Non-members may view the scholarship details online but cannot apply. Applications are judged by a third-party, independent of Golden Key. Golden Key Asia-Pacific and your URO do not have access to your scholarship applications.

Are the scholarship application deadlines very strict?

Yes. All scholarship applications must be submitted by the indicated deadline. The deadline is listed directly under the scholarship name.

The scholarship application requires a GPA. My country uses a different GPA, what do I do?

GPA's vary from country to country, and even within Australia these vary as well, from a 4 point system to a 7 point system. In New Zealand cumulative GPA's do not apply. For this reason members will need to calculate the corresponding GPA themselves. We suggest that scholarship applicants include a simple covering letter for the panel highlighting they are from a different region. You can also use a GPA calculator to convert your GPA to a 4 point system. An easy way to calculate your GPA on the 4.0 system is to divide your GPA by the total GPA and then times it by 4. For example, if your GPA is 6.5 out of a possible 7.0, you would 6.5 / 7 x 4 = 3.7 out of 4.0

When will I hear whether I have won a scholarship?

Winners and non-winners will be notified via email up to 120 days after the listed application deadline.

Who do I contact about scholarship enquiries?

Email all enquiries to awards@goldenkey.org.
